Who owns ALDI? ALDI Süd runs the U.S. business

ALDI U.S. belongs to ALDI Süd. Trader Joe’s is owned by families that also own part of ALDI Nord, and it says it’s independent of both.

ALDI U.S. belongs to the ALDI Süd group. Trader Joe’s is owned by families that also own part of ALDI Nord. Trader Joe’s says it operates independently of Nord and has no business or ownership relationship with Süd, including ALDI U.S. Trader Joe’s FAQ.

That’s why I’d start with ALDI Süd. The same family split explains why two German discount chains and an American grocer, Trader Joe’s, keep turning up together whenever someone asks who owns ALDI.

Method & limits

Sources checked October 26, 2026. Private-company status is supported by ALDI’s April 2, 2024 ACCC submission. Foundation names come from a historical 2015 report, not a current personal stake table. Trader Joe’s ownership wording is its current FAQ statement.

The Albrecht business split into two groups in 1961

ALDI Süd’s history dates Karl and Theo Albrecht’s two-group structure to 1961. The U.S. history names the Albrecht family and dates the first American store, in Iowa, to 1976. The shared origin helps explain the names without putting every operation beneath one modern parent.

Three names lead to two ALDI groups

The map follows the group history and Trader Joe’s own ownership statement. It identifies the U.S. operating connection and the Nord-side family relationship.

ALDI NordThe other ALDI group from the family splitKeep its interests distinct from ALDI U.S.
Trader Joe’sOwned by families that also own part of ALDI NordOperates independently; states no ownership link to ALDI Süd or ALDI U.S.

Trader Joe’s ownership wording is its own current FAQ statement. The map is not an individual family stake register.

Historical disclosures name South-group foundations

ALDI South’s 2015 responsibility report identified Siepmann-Stiftung and Carolus-Stiftung as holders of its principal capital interests. Those historical names explain the family-and-foundation structure. They don’t quantify current personal stakes.

ALDI and Trader Joe’s are private

ALDI described its South Group as privately held in an April 2, 2024 ACCC submission. Trader Joe’s FAQ also says it is private and not publicly traded. I would keep the American ALDI business with Süd and follow Trader Joe’s through its own ownership. The family history explains the connection; it does not combine the businesses or make either one publicly traded.
